Book Club Historical Fiction

If you love the WWII sagas of Kristin Hannah, Kate Quinn, and Susan Meissner, you'll want to add THE PERFUMER to your ereader. This book club historical fiction saga is an emotional WWII story that follows a female French perfumer determined to reunite her family. This novel has a special place in my heart with a rich backstory on how it came to be over the course of 15 years.

The Perfumer: Scent of Triumph was inspired by a true story and revolves around a fictional French perfumer, Danielle Bretancourt, her aristocratic German husband, and the loss of their child behind enemy lines.

I was working in the luxury perfume industry at the time of writing, and this story contains many insights gleaned from my friendships and interactions with legendary perfumers. The story also mirrors what many went through during that war, including my husband's family. For me, this was a highly personal saga.

My father was a WWII pilot, and my mother recalled many memories and details that I included in the story. Imagine her surprise when the publisher included a photo of her from the 1940s in the book! She felt like a celebrity, and I was so happy that I could do that for her. This was my first novel for St. Martin's Press, where I shared a wonderful editor with Kristin Hannah (The Nightingale).

As a bonus, if you love vintage perfume, you'll discover many in this story, including excerpts from Danielle's perfume journal, which many perfumers keep to record olfactory impressions. You'll live the war with its trials and triumphs through Danielle's special olfactory lens. I hope this story will touch your heart as it did mine. And if you'd like to read my vintage perfume playlist for The Perfumer, you can find it on my blog, along with a book club discussion guide and other articles on perfume and writing.
