Book Club Discussion Idea from The Perfumer: Scent of Triumph - Aromatrack for Vintage Perfumes

ShalimarSince one of my books is about a French perfumer, I thought it would be interesting to bring another dimension of the senses—the olfactory sense—to the reading experience, especially for those in book clubs.

As I was writing, I would often set the scene—my own writing venue—with true-to-the-period (1939-1947) perfume, music, and, truth-be-told, the occasional glass of wine or snifter of cognac. (Of course, I won’t pretend that I was swilling a fine period wine from the 1940s, but I can make some good suggestions for more recent vintages!)

Joy mid-sizeGood discussion questions for bookclubs include: What are YOUR favorite vintage fragrances? Women’s or men’s or both. Do you have any vintage fragrance memories of family members or first loves? I have a special affinity for vintage perfume, and avidly follow the works of perfumers, both vintage and new.

So, light a few candles, uncork the wine, and sniff these perfumes to your heart’s content.
